The student body of Columbia University shares a rich history of resisting injustice--from the 1968 occupations of campus buildings to protest racism and the Vietnam War to the numerous recent demonstrations on campus for environmental, political, economic, racial and social justice. The Columbia University Democrats stand in solidarity with the direct action of student and community organizers demanding a more peaceful and equitable world.
Individuals within the CU Dems frequently attend political demonstrations in the NYC area and beyond. In the past, members have gathered to join marches hosted by organizations such as Decolonize This Place, March for Our Lives, ACLU, the Women's March, Housing Works, #CancelKavanaugh, and the Human Rights Campaign. WORKING GROUPS
Working groups are small teams of general body members dedicated to particular issues of interest. Care about healthcare reform in New York State? Great! Policing reform in NYC? Awesome! Reproductive rights across the nation? Excellent! Start or join a working group and get the opportunity to organize around your issue of choice with the support of Dems’ membership and resources. Follow us on social media to stay up-to-date!
Every semester, each working group mobilizes internally around one initiative of their choosing, along with one initiative that reaches out to the broader Dems community. Examples of previous projects include letter-writing and phone banking campaigns to elected officials and voters, organizing community events, and lobbying for bills.
